Hello, I'm Melissa. I support students to get clear on their academic path, work through difficult emotions, and feel more confident and grounded. Many of my clients come to me feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure about their direction in life. Others struggle with perfectionism, burnout, or relationship challenges. I have 20 years experience as a clinical social worker, and I offer a safe, supportive and easy-going approach. I like to infuse mindfulness and humor into my sessions, while also keeping my clients on task and clear about goals. Over the years, I’ve helped hundreds of students heal, grow, and create more meaningful lives. I also specialize in helping clients strengthen their intuition. Developing a clear inner knowing makes it easier to trust yourself when making decisions, so you can feel more centered, confident, and at ease in your own skin. If you want to see if we're a good fit, I offer free 15 minute consultations so I can learn more about you and get a better sense of how I might be able to help. Navigating OCD, anxiety, relationships, and life transitions can be emotionally and physically draining. There is little more frustrating than thinking and behaving in the same ways despite knowing they contribute to these issues and other debilitating symptoms. Therapy is a place to safely explore the thoughts, behaviors, and relationships that are interfering with living a more fulfilling and rewarding life. I am a trained OCD specialist and an active member of the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF). I have extensive experience working with college undergrad and graduate students from my time as a counselor at the University of Colorado, Boulder and at Bryant University. Working directly on a college campus has provided me with a unique understanding of the intersection between academics and mental health, as well as how to navigate many campus systems best. Currently, in my private practice, I work with college students from the many different colleges in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Colorado. The majority of clients that I work with are navigating Anxiety or OCD and Related Disorders. My clinical approach to therapy is grounded in ERP, ACT, and CBT. I believe therapy is built around compassion, respect, and trust. I look forward to connecting with you and exploring how we can collaboratively achieve your treatment goals. Send me an email, give me a call, or visit my website (www.smithlicsw.com) to set up an appointment. If you are struggling and are tired of trying to handle things alone, please do not hesitate to get in touch. * I provide telehealth services to clients in Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Illinois, Vermont, and Colorado.*

I work best with people who are curious about understanding themselves and the experiences that have shaped them. Many of the students and clients I support are navigating anxiety, stress, relationships, identity, career questions, major life decisions, or feeling unsure about their next steps. In addition to being a counselor, I am a psychology and career development educator. I regularly work with college students exploring their strengths, values, goals, and the question many of us face during transitions: “Who am I, and where do I want to go from here?” My approach is collaborative and human. Together, we explore your story with curiosity rather than criticism, better understand patterns, reconnect with your strengths and values, and build practical tools to help you move forward with more intention.

I work with college students who are feeling emotionally exhausted, stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of what comes next. Many of my clients are navigating academic and relationship stress, identity exploration, life transitions, or broader mental health concerns. They’re often tired of feeling tired and are ready to start creating change, even if they’re not sure exactly what needs to shift. I see my clients as the experts on their own lives, and I value collaboration, transparency, and ongoing feedback throughout the therapeutic process. Together, we’ll explore what truly matters to you and build practical tools to help you move toward a life that feels more meaningful and aligned with your values. If you’re curious about working together, I invite you to schedule a consult call with me through my website! On our call, you can ask me any questions you may have, we'll talk a bit about your current stressors and goals for therapy, and will help us assess if we’re a good fit. I hope to hear from you!

You’re not broken...you’re overwhelmed. If you’re a college student, grad student, or campus professional who looks like they’re “doing fine” but feels anything but fine on the inside, you’re not alone. Many of the people I work with say things like: “My brain never shuts off.” “I overthink everything I say or do.” “I’m exhausted, but slowing down feels scary.” “I keep it together for everyone else, but I’m unraveling inside.” “I don’t know how to rest without guilt.” On the outside, you’re capable, responsible, and high-functioning. On the inside, it feels like you’re carrying a constant mental and emotional load, and you’re tired of holding it all alone. I work with students and campus professionals who are: •burnt out and emotionally overloaded •stuck in anxiety, overthinking, or shame spirals •sensitive to feedback, conflict, or perceived disappointment •struggling with ADHD-style busy brains or emotional regulation •quietly afraid they’re “too much” or “not enough” You don’t need another productivity system, mindset hack, or pressure to “get it together.” You need a space where: •you don’t have to perform •your nervous system can slow down •your thoughts don’t run the show •you can untangle what actually matters to you How we’ll work together My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) -a skills-based, evidence-supported approach that helps you: •get out of mental spirals without trying to force your thoughts away •respond more flexibly to stress, emotions, and uncertainty •build self-trust instead of self-criticism •create steadiness without losing your drive or ambition This isn’t about fixing you. It’s about learning how to be with yourself differently with more clarity, compassion, and choice. Support that fits campus life •Online therapy — flexible and accessible around classes, teaching, and work schedules •Walk & Talk sessions — for clients who think better with movement and nature •Small supportive groups — connection without pressure or emotional labor •Between-session tools — gentle prompts and supports so therapy doesn’t live only in the session If you’re wondering… •“Is therapy going to be too intense?” •“What if I don’t even know what I need?” •“What if I’m not ‘bad enough’ for therapy?” Those questions make sense — and you don’t need to answer them before reaching out. I offer complimentary consultations so you can get a feel for the process without pressure or obligation. You don’t have to know exactly what you want yet. We’ll start where you are — and move at a pace that actually works for you. 👉 Schedule a free consultation at www.thereddoortherapy.org ⸻ Emily MacNiven CO Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) LPC.0019496 Founder of The Red Door Therapy & Wellness Solutions Online therapy for adults across Colorado 🔗 www.thereddoortherapy.org

Fundamentally, my aim is to support my clients in contacting their inner self-knowing, and "make friends" with all of the various parts of themselves in the warmth and security of this inner space. To achieve this, I practice person-centered therapy, with a strong emphasis on somatic awareness. When working with clients, I am listening for "what wants to be heard" that day. In my view, I am a supportive and curious observer, and my job is to reflect back to my client what I am seeing. My style tends to be more direct, and I regularly encourage my clients to take ownership over their treatment and to trust themselves. In a first session with me, we explore where you've been, where you are, and where you would like to go. Often, I invite people to tell me their story and then describe their current situation. We will work together to assess what feels like the most supportive areas of focus, and will create some goals which guide our future sessions. During this process, however, you can still expect curiousity, empowerment, and validation. What's most important in any session is establishing a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship.

I often work with students who are dealing with anxiety, school stress, family conflict, or feeling overwhelmed by expectations. You might feel like you’re trying to keep everything together while struggling on the inside. In therapy, we’ll slow things down, make sense of what you’re experiencing, and develop skills that help you feel more grounded in yourself and supported in life. I also encourage parent coaching sessions to help caregivers learn tools to better support their child’s emotional growth.

I specialize in promoting emotional and relational wellness by addressing concerns about depression, anxiety, and other issues resulting from trauma. I am a naturally intuitive and empathetic person, so part of who I am as a therapist is genuinely enjoying listening to people talk about their lives. My primary goal is to create a safe space for you to explore your feelings - snarkiness, self-deprecating humor, cursing, etc. is all welcome and accepted. Over time, I will help you make sense of your experiences and start to see and understand yourself from a more compassionate perspective. I'm also a neuroscience nerd, so another part of who I am as a therapist is helping you understand how your brain works and the how and why of what we’re doing in therapy. We'll talk about subpersonalities, neuroplasticity, memory networks, and more...but don't worry: I have an extensive library of articles, videos, and memes to help explain things. The most important part of who I am as a therapist is believing that therapy isn't just where you learn how to “deal with” mental health problems, but that for those who are ready, therapy can provide real healing. Using IFS-Informed EMDR, I help clients “reconsolidate” trauma memories, allowing you to experience transformational and lasting change.

Have you been struggling with reoccurring thoughts, memories, and images of past stressful events that you can't get out of your mind? Are you experiencing loss of time with no explanation, feeling out of control of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors? Does it sometimes feel that you are living life from the back seat with no control? You could be experiencing dissociation and the after effects of trauma. I specialize in working with the whole self to process through past trauma & negative beliefs about yourself in order to open up new ways of interacting with the world and new beliefs. As an EMDR trained therapist I use your brain's natural neuron network to help you reform negative beliefs about yourself that were formed in trauma. The brain holds onto trauma; using bilateral stimulation it is possible to make sense of our past memories so that they do not have emotional power over our lives. EMDR has also been known to decrease anxiety. If you are an individual who is struggling with past trauma, dissociation, or anxiety; please feel free to contact me for a free 30 minute consult to see if I am the right therapist for you. I would love to help guide you along your healing journey.
