Our practice is guided by the most current research available. The treatments we utilize have been shown to be most effective in reducing symptoms and improving quality of life among patients with anxiety, mood and related disorders. We focus on what works. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an umbrella term for methods that share a focus on thoughts and behaviors that maintain symptoms, willingness to try new behaviors, and patterns of relating to our experiences. Between-session practice of these strategies serves to consolidate gains achieved in treatment sessions.

Welcome! I specialize in working with young adults facing challenges like anxiety, OCD, ADHD, and depression. My approach combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to provide a tailored, effective treatment experience. More importantly, I focus on building a positive, trusting relationship with each client. I believe therapy works best when you feel truly understood and supported. In our sessions, you’ll find a warm, non-judgmental space where you can openly explore your thoughts and feelings. I love incorporating art, creativity, even dogs into the treatment space to help you reach your goals. Together, we’ll work on practical tools to help you manage overwhelming emotions, break free from unwanted patterns, and feel more in control. My goal is to empower you with the skills and confidence to navigate life’s challenges while fostering a stronger sense of self.

Licensed Professional Counselor
Chicago, IL

Daniel Lovan, LPC (He/Him) is an LGBTQIA+ therapist specializing in trauma-informed therapy for adolescents and adults. Daniel earned his MA in Community Counseling from Loyola University Chicago and has extensive training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) that informs his use of other evidence-based practices such as CBT, ACT, and Exposure Therapy. Daniel is also trained in and utilizes Written Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and DBT Prolonged Exposures as discreet trauma protocols for clients suffering from acute trauma symptoms. Due to his history and love of teaching in group therapy settings, Daniel emphasizes psychoeducation and a mindful, non-judgmental approach to help his clients see themselves in a more understanding and self-compassionate way that allows them to strip away the shame, guilt, and fear preventing them from curating their desired life worth living. Daniel prioritizes teaching DBT Skills, Polyvagal Theory, and Somatic experiences in his work with individuals, couples, and family systems. “If you’ve ever felt like you needed someone who just gets it, or if you’ve ever wanted a therapist who feels like a “real person” then you’ve come to the right place. How can I ask you to be your true, vulnerable self without also being vulnerable myself? I want to be on your journey of highs and lows with you and to teach you concrete skills along the way that will help you break free from patterns that you feel powerless to change. I’m looking forward to working with you and teaching you to see yourself, the world, and others, in totally new ways!”

My approach to therapy is individualized, attentive, direct, and flexible. Guided by Lacanian psychoanalysis and grounded in social justice, I offer patients a space to speak freely about their suffering, history, questions, wishes, fantasies, and desires. I listen carefully for the unconscious in their patients’ speech, focusing on the unique complexity of each patient. Speaking, listening, and being heard in this way opens up new possibilities for ways of relating to oneself and others. This approach works for a wide variety of concerns, including those that are difficult to put into words. I offer individual art and talk therapy to patients of all ages who are willing to speak about their suffering and learn new things about themselves. I also provides couples and relationship counseling to partners, exes, and roommates. I reserve a number of appointments each week for sliding scale patients. Please reach out if a reduced fee would allow you to access my services.

It takes a lot of courage to reach out to someone for help. To share your most private thoughts and feelings with someone you don’t know. Yet entering into a relationship with a therapist is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself. Whether you're an 18 - 22 year old student facing the new challenges of college life or a returning student coming back to school after years away, the demands of college can take a real toll on your mental health. I'm here to help you sort out your feelings and organize your thoughts, to help you focus on what really matters to you. I practice depth-oriented psychodynamic therapy. This means that I will spend time listening to you to fully understand what's troubling you and how you got here. Through that shared understanding, we will chart a path towards healing.

I aim to make therapy a space where, above all, two humans can come together to connect, while working to understand and process the difficult thoughts, feelings, and sensations that come along with life. I work primarily with adults, and always seek to create a therapeutic space based on connection, empathy, understanding, and sometimes humor. I specialize in the treatment of OCD and anxiety diagnoses, as well as experiences with chronic pain, illness, and other somatic-based problems. Others areas within my experience include: depression, trauma-based diagnoses, relational problems, and psychodynamic informed talk therapy. I am passionate about working with students experiencing grief, trauma, OCD, life transitions, depression, anxiety, panic, ADHD, identity exploration, relationship difficulties, suicidality, and more. I work specifically with young adults, college and graduate students, and athletes. I provide a safe, judgment-free space to share, explore, and find solutions to your struggles. I believe in exploring, not explaining, and provide clients with the agency to determine how they want sessions to look and feel. I bring authenticity, humor, transparency, and cultural humility to my work. I appreciate the courage required to book a session and look forward to meeting you.

Nothing human can be alien to me -Terence. Within the bounds of a safe relationship, I hope you can let the ugly, shameful and irrational parts of you breathe. Together, we can encounter them with compassion, as this is often where the work lies. I endeavor to create a warm holding environment for you as we explore issues more deeply and understand their origins through psychoanalytic, relational and existential perspectives. I share my conceptualizations with clients and provide psychoeducation to increase insight into our unconscious experiences, while honoring individual uniqueness, cultural nuances, and other complexities. I enjoy working with BIPOC individuals (especially AADPI and South Asian), first- and second- generation immigrants, LGBTQIA+ identifying individuals, men’s issues, and those with religious or spiritual backgrounds. I’m also interested in therapy with couples and intimate unions. I integrate a variety of approaches, fitting the needs of each client. I am currently a fellow at the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis. I received my Master’s in Counseling from Northwestern University and have two years of clinical experience working with clients from a range of backgrounds and presenting issues. I feel honored to do this work and I look forward to working with you.

Therapy is a place that balances acceptance and change. Maybe you have noticed an imbalance in your life and are struggling to either find out or work towards what matters most to you. I want to be your collaborator as we work towards what you care about by integrating mindfulness, looking at past patterns, and understanding how larger societal systems impact you. My goal is to help you live a life you feel connected to and are proud of. The success of our work together is dependent upon the establishment of a solid relationship between us and collaboration. My areas of specialty include processing emotion, identity, relational conflict, depression, anxiety, self-compassion, and LGBTQ concerns. I have experience in multiple settings, including private practice, community agency work, and group practices. Therapy can be a difficult process to begin. Call or email to set up a 15-minute phone consultation. We'll discuss what is bringing you to therapy and if I will be a good fit. Please include your insurance carrier and primary concern in your initial voicemail or e-mail message.
