Ombu Counseling specializes in helping those facing new challenges in life, those in the process of negotiating their place in an adoptive environment, and those seeking to assert themselves in relationships, groups and/or families in which conflicting values, beliefs and expectations prevail. Major life transitions are challenging, especially when they provoke questions about one’s identity, culture, core-values and sense of belonging. Trying to figure this out can result in feelings of confusion and emotional exhaustion. Counseling offers a process for reflecting on such questions and space for containing the emotions they produce.
Our approach to therapy is to create a safe space where you can explore and heal the difficult and painful issues that are showing up in your life. Together we will move beyond problem-solving into releasing the deeply held mistaken beliefs and core unresolved issues behind your symptoms. Our body-centered and somatic approach allows me to work directly with your nervous system to address symptoms like anxiety, racing thoughts, and irrational fears as well as feeling stuck, depressed and unavailable or unresponsive to life and relationships. We integrate traditional psychotherapy with coaching, mindfulness, EMDR, Hypnotherapy, Breathwork, Somatic work, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems and other evidence-based approaches. We work together to clear that path so that your most authentic, creative, and passionate self can emerge and shine through. We encourage you to reach out for a free consultation and see what’s possible when you invest time and energy into your healing. I help individuals and couples open a transformational space where anything is possible. I also work with leaders and executives to master the relationship and emotional Intelligence skills necessary to be at the top of their game. Feel free to reach out for a free phone consultation.
We are an evolving collective of mental health professionals who have committed to the pursuit of personal and systemic growth on every level of our society. Our practice began as a friendship and has continued to grow as we have built associations with highly competent, seasoned and relationally oriented therapists. We have become a vibrant community, with a broad base of clinical expertise. However, we remain small enough to be accessible and responsive to each individual we support. Our practice is effective, innovative and totally down to earth. The client and our relationship with them is the central focus of treatment. Our clinical expertise and relational approach work in harmony to provide an ideal foundation for exploring a co-constructed, mutual process of growth.
As a first-generation college student who has navigated the challenges of attending two large universities, I understand how overwhelming and isolating the college experience can sometimes feel. From academic pressure and financial stress to identity exploration and imposter syndrome, college presents unique challenges that can take a toll on your mental health. For many first-generation students, the transition to college comes with the added pressure of being the first in their family to take this journey. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate an unfamiliar system without a roadmap. Balancing school, work, and personal life while feeling the weight of expectations (personal and academic) can be exhausting. Sometimes, it can feel like you're carrying someone else hopes while trying to find your path. I am here to support students facing anxiety, perfectionism, burnout, school-related stress, racial identity and exploration, and the struggles that come with balancing personal identity with academic and social expectations. Whether you're dealing with the stress of coursework, adjusting to campus life, navigating your racial or cultural identity in a predominantly white institution, or exploring your gender and sexual identity in a new environment, I want to create a safe and affirming space where you feel seen, heard and supported.
We started Smart Behavior Solutions with the goal of going against the grain. While most therapy practices use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as a means to modify thought patterns to change moods & behaviors, we use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help patients recognize and accept the many aspects of life. ACT helps patients understand who they are and choose the associated beneficial behaviors. These behaviors are based on the most important people & things in life. Our therapists work with you to create change.
As a compassionate therapist, I am dedicated to supporting young adults through anxiety, depression, self-esteem struggles, burnout, and various life transitions. I understand how hard this stage of life can feel, whether it be overwhelming emotions or heightened pressures — and you don’t have to navigate it alone. My approach is warm, collaborative, and free of judgement. I aim to bring a mix of curiosity, compassion, and humor to create a safe space where you can fully be yourself. I help clients explore the underlying causes of their struggles and develop effective tools for coping, healing, and growth. I lead with a person-centered style, focusing on building real authentic connection. At the same time, I bring in more structured tools when they’re helpful, pulling from CBT, DBT, and mindfulness practices. If you’re feeling curious, unsure, or even a little nervous, that’s completely normal. I’m here to meet you where you’re at — no expectations. Just a genuine conversation about what’s going on and how I might be able to help!

My approach to therapy is based on mutual appreciation. Through openness and acceptance, we can work together on personal issues and emotional situations you face. I support individuals in learning to heal their own suffering through discovery of the gentleness, warmth, wisdom, and compassion that is an innate capacity of all human beings. I enjoy working with people on their journeys and helping them to nurture their inner and outer worlds with kindness and awareness. My practice is informed by cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic techniques, client-centered approach, as well as mindfulness, self-compassion, and Buddhist psychology. My clinical experience includes a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, spirituality, relationships, substance abuse, and gender identity. I received a Master of Social Work and a Master of Divinity from the University of Chicago. I have also worked as a hospital chaplain and am familiar with contemplative practices in patient care. For several years now, I have facilitated a weekly meditation group as a way to promote growth and healing in our community. I am fluent in English and Chinese.
From the outside, things may look stable—even successful. You’ve built a career, managed responsibilities, and kept everything moving forward. But internally, there may be a quiet sense of overwhelm, disconnection, or pressure that’s becoming harder to ignore. Many high-achieving professionals and couples reach a point where pushing through is no longer enough. The stress lingers, relationships feel strained, and the balance you once had feels out of reach. Karen Greenberg, LCSW, provides therapy in Evanston, IL, and throughout Illinois by telehealth, for individuals and couples who want more than short-term relief. The work focuses on helping you understand what’s underneath these patterns so you can move forward with clarity, confidence, and stronger connections.
My clients are people who often feel stuck in their thoughts, whether those thoughts are anxious, self-critical, perfectionistic, or filled with doubt. They might be struggling with OCD, social anxiety, phobias, trauma, or just the overwhelming pressure to always get things “right.” My clients come from a variety of background and identities. They want relief, but not just a quick fix. They’re looking to better understand themselves, break free from rigid patterns, and move toward a life that feels more connected, meaningful, and aligned.
The decision to seek therapy is a very important decision, but choosing the right therapist is even more important since one of the best predictors of a positive therapy outcome is the fit between client and therapist. I strive to provide the people with whom I work an environment that is comfortable, nonjudgmental, and genuinely validating. My job is to provide a space for you to access your strengths and attributes, and with this I can provide psychological approaches to help you address the concerns that brought you in for therapy. I have extensive experience in treating anxiety disorders, (GAD, phobias, panic). I also have extensive experience in treating mood disorders, such as depression. I also have extensive experience in treating trauma. Additionally, I treat academic challenges, such as procrastination and perfectionism. Finally, I also treat psychosis, anger management issues, relationship problems, and tough life decisions, and a host of other issues. Initially, my job is to listen and help us understand the problem. Also during this time, I'll share diagnostic and other relevant information, and then give options on how we might address the problem. We will also periodically evaluate our progress in therapy to ensure that your goals are being met.
