Therapists for college students near Chicago, IL

When we need support, it can be intimidating to know where to start. You may be feeling trapped by the past and overwhelmed by the future, struggling with self-doubt, or experiencing loneliness. To overcome feeling lost and stuck, therapy can help you figure out your options, learn more about yourself, and find new ways to cope. By beginning the search for therapy, you have already shown courage and self-awareness to recognize you are ready for change. As a queer woman, my approach to therapy is trauma-informed, sex-positive, and anti-oppressive. I have over a decade of experience working with people living with anxiety, depression, and burnout. In serving survivors of abuse and violence, I supported them in their recovery and healing from trauma. I have partnered with clients on their journey to build meaningful relationships and to explore their gender and sexuality.

Caitlin Rosswurm
I earned my Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago with a specialization in clinical mental health, and hold certifications in alcohol and drug counseling (CADC) and in the assessment and treatment of trauma (NMT Phase I). In my training, I have worked with adolescents and adults in a variety of settings, including community youth programming, community mental health centers, and private practice. I work from a client-centered, strengths-based, and integrative approach in which I am able to tailor therapy to the individual client’s needs. I believe in the power of utilizing attachment and psychodynamic theories to better understand the origins of symptoms along with implementing cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness techniques to relieve symptoms. Because I believe that connection is fundamental to the healing process, I aim to create a warm and accepting therapeutic relationship that allows me to understand the challenges you face, help you determine the goals you hope to work toward, and empower you to create significant and lasting change. My areas of specialization include anxiety, trauma, substance use, relational conflict, self-esteem, and life transitions. When I’m not working, you can find me going to yoga classes, working through a long bucket list of Chicago restaurants, and planning my next travel adventure.

With a Master of Arts in Art Therapy and Counseling and a background in Fine Arts and Psychology, I use a creative and thoughtful approach to guide you through this process. At Thrive Ahead Co., I offer a space where you can safely explore your feelings, process your thoughts, and find the clarity and confidence to move forward. Who I Work With You might be feeling anxious or unsure about your identity, and that’s okay. I work with people who, like you, are ready to dive deep into understanding themselves. Maybe you feel like there’s a lot to figure out, and you need a place where you can reflect and explore without judgment. You want to grow, to feel more secure in who you are, and maybe even discover new ways to experience joy and fulfillment. You might not have all the answers right now, but you’re curious. You’re looking for someone who can guide you through this—someone you can trust, who will collaborate with you, and who can bring a little humor into the process when needed. If you’re open to change, even when it feels a little scary, we’ll make progress together. How We’ll Work Together Our sessions will be a mix of traditional therapy and creative exploration, depending on what feels right for you. I believe that growth happens when you have the space to be yourself, explore your thoughts, and express your emotions—whether through conversation, art, or a bit of both. I’ve worked with people in all kinds of settings, helping them unpack what’s going on inside and move toward a clearer, more confident version of themselves. In our work together, I’ll meet you where you are, and we’ll go from there at your pace. Are You Ready? If you’re ready to take a closer look at who you are and where you want to go, I’m here to walk that path with you. This process is about discovering more of yourself, finding your strengths, and moving toward a life where you feel secure and true to who you are. In my practice, I am particularly passionate about working with young adults as they navigate the unique pressures and transitions that are present during this stage of life. Whether you are adjusting to a new phase, questioning purpose or direction, experiencing self-doubt, or feeling overwhelmed, you do not need to figure it out alone. My approach is grounded in building a collaborative relationship that focuses on understanding your unique goals. I aim to build a partnership that feels safe and allows you to openly explore what you are experiencing and feeling with curiosity and honesty. Together, we can determine what is working for you and where you might feel stuck. Many clients work with me in order to shift something about their relationship with themselves or with others. This may mean building self-confidence; clarifying values; or quieting self-criticism. We may also work through navigating conflict; setting boundaries; or healing from past trauma. Please visit my profile on psychologytoday.com or my website to learn more about me and my practice, and feel free to reach out to see if we might be a good fit!

Many of the students I work with are navigating major life transitions while carrying the weight of stress, anxiety, trauma, family expectations, relationship challenges, or feelings of not quite belonging. I especially enjoy working with first-generation college students, students from immigrant families, women, and neurodivergent students, including those with ADHD. Together, we create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can better understand yourself, build practical coping skills, strengthen relationships, and move toward a life that feels more aligned with your values. You don't have to have everything figured out before coming to therapy—we can start exactly where you are.

College can bring a lot of change at once. You may be adjusting to greater independence, managing academic pressure, questioning what you want for your future, or trying to figure out who you are outside of the expectations you’ve carried with you. You might look like you’re handling everything on the outside while anxiety, perfectionism, OCD, or concerns about food and your body are taking up more space than you want them to. I enjoy working with college and graduate students who are curious about themselves and want to better understand what’s underneath the patterns they’re experiencing. I have extensive experience working with eating disorders, disordered eating and body image concerns, and OCD, and I also support students navigating anxiety, trauma, perfectionism, self esteem, identity exploration, and life transitions. I believe that what you’re experiencing doesn’t exist in isolation. Your culture, identities, family, relationships, and the systems around you can all shape how you understand yourself and move through the world. I especially enjoy working with women of color, BIPOC students, LGBTQ+ students, and students with other marginalized identities, and I welcome these parts of you into our work together. My approach is collaborative, relational, and curious. I’ll take time to get to know you and understand what you’re experiencing rather than assuming there is one right way to approach therapy. We can explore what may be keeping certain patterns in place, identify what matters to you, and build practical tools for navigating difficult thoughts and emotions. I’ll follow your lead while also offering questions, new perspectives, or gentle challenges when they may help you go deeper. I draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS), adapting our work based on what feels most helpful for you. My hope is that therapy gives you space to understand yourself with greater compassion, feel more equipped to navigate challenges, and develop greater trust in yourself as you move through college and whatever comes next.
