I am well versed in the transition from high school to college. I am familiar with college expectations, the challenges of making new friends, and learning how to be independent. College can be such an exciting time but also really hard! It is so important to learn strategies to manage stress and having a safe place to talk about whatever you need.

I see therapy as guidance for healing, self-development, and an opportunity to feel understood. Through a collaborative, therapeutic approach, I utilize empathy, patience, and a sense of humor, to help clients through unexpected challenges and transitional life phases. To individual counseling, I bring a combination of my clinical background and empathy through the use of a strengths based and person centered approach. By drawing on my experience, knowledge, and skills, I help you restore your life. I strive to provide individualized, compassionate psychotherapy in a safe, welcoming environment. I have experience working in hospice and oncology social work. My areas of expertise are grief and loss, chronic, serious, and terminal illnesses, chronic pain, cancer and cancer survivorship, and caregiver fatigue. I serve adults (18+) and people over 65 and welcome those of varied ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.

Do you suffer from negative thoughts and feelings? I treat adults with issues ranging from depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, OCD, life transitions, or low self-esteem. I also help to support and teach coping skills to individuals, or couples, experiencing any difficulties that can arise during pre-pregnancy, while pregnant, and after childbirth. With my diverse work history, I have created a unique perspective on how to treat and help my clients in ways you won’t find with other therapists. I use a combination of traditional talk therapy, strengths-based approach, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and lots of humor to help people gain the confidence and tools they need to feel better. Paul Coleman is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Coleman Mental Health Associates specializing in patient mental health. What is essential for people to realize is “no two people are the same”. Thus, each patient will receive an individualized, collaborative care plan in this outpatient office. Treatment includes several mental health conditions that have depression, bipolar, anxiety, trauma, LGBTQI issues, and medication management, to name a few. My primary focus and goals are to provide a safe place for patients to realize their strengths. This includes working together with listening to your concerns and developing customizable, collaborative treatment plans that helps you feel empowered in making decisions regarding your care. This biopsychosocial paradigm takes a holistic approach to identifying and assess overall health. This includes exercise, sleep hygiene, and psychotherapy to name a few. While medication management is part of this practice, not everyone needs medications, therefore prescribing when necessary. The goal is to get to the root cause of your struggles and help you move forward.

College students today face so many pressures: family and peer expectations, major life decisions, an onslaught of social media messages, and multiple socio-political crises. Though these problems are daunting, you do not need to face them alone. I would be grateful to accompany you as you respond to the questions and challenges impacting your life. In my work thus far, my clients have often felt a sense of separation or space open up between themselves and their problems. I have helped people feel “known” for who they want to be in life, separate and apart from the influence of depression, anxiety, failure, addiction, conflict, hardship, etc. This gives them more room to explore the forgotten or not-yet-developed stories of their hopes, passions, values, and purposes, which can contribute to a feeling of empowerment in facing whatever difficult experiences brought them to therapy. Though I help people navigate many different kinds of mental and emotional challenges, I have a particular interest in having therapy conversations with folks 1) concerned about the environment, 2) interested in or wondering about their spirituality/ religion, and 3) who identify as men or who are dealing with the effects of patriarchy.

Life through any transitional stage is difficult, and college is certainly not an exception. I aim to help students find their way through an often challenging period of time. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, a lack of meaning or direction, substance misuse, or relationship issues, I will provide you with a warm space to process these issues and attempt to deeply see and understand your struggle. I value more than any other clinical skill, my ability to listen. Being truly seen and understood is often a catalyst for change and growth.

As helpers, we are committed to meeting you exactly where you are by using our collection of professional tools to assist you to reach your highest potential through connection to your “true” self, the part of you who is waiting to be rediscovered and made manifest. Our orientation as therapists combines our understanding of human development, psychology, and behavioral change with wisdom and practice that is woven through most spiritual traditions. You need not consider yourself a spiritual person, nor do we insist on a particular belief system. This is only to say that our orientation integrates this awareness as an element of healing. Our ultimate goal is to empower you to free yourself from the patterns that keep you from fully thriving and to help you create the life you want to be living. It is an act of courage, not weakness, to allow others to help you.
