I am a Board Certified Psychiatrist and I draw from my 10+ years of experience in College Mental Health to provide care to students preparing for and managing the mental health challenges of college. I strongly believe in evaluating and treating the whole person and in meeting you where you are with a goal of helping you find the path to your best possible self. I have a particular interest in anxiety related disorders and utilize a holistic approach to managing anxiety and helping students optimize wellness. I incorporate skills from CBT, ACT, and Mindfulness into my therapy practice. I utilize medication management if and when indicated to optimize treatment. Due to my limited office hours, I am not equipped to treat conditions that could require urgent and immediate care and thus if you are struggling with chronic or treatment-resistant resistant mood disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, addictions, severe eating disorders, or chronic suicidality, I recommend you seek care through a health system or provider that offers more services suited to best meet your needs.

You keep wondering if you are repeating the same pattern again and again; it feels inevitable and totally out of your control and yet you can't stop blaming yourself. I commend you for holding on to hope, for reaching out. It requires courage and inner strength to look for someone who is trained to listen and help. I have training and experience helping those who struggle with depression, anxiety, memories of trauma, career and relationship difficulties.
I believe that all therapy starts by building a detailed understanding of each person in the context of a developing therapeutic relationship. I will work with you collaboratively to develop a plan for your success based on your specific goals. Often, this plan includes enhancing knowledge, increasing self-awareness, and learning new skills. I offer an integration of therapeutic approaches, including relational (focusing on interpersonal interactions), mindfulness (emphasizing awareness and attention to one's experience), and cognitive-behavioral techniques (focusing on the impact of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors). I work to help individuals managing anxiety, depression, life transitions, and relational stressors. In addition, I have specialized training & experience in helping people heal from trauma. I have training and experience working with couples looking to improve connection and overcome difficulties in healthier manners.
Our team values a therapeutic style that is warm, yet interactive and direct. We believe in providing clients with a comfortable and safe climate to enhance personal insight, explore problematic patterns, learn practical skills, and make meaningful change. As a collaborative process, we highly value open discussion in therapy about what feels to be working well, and what feels to be less effective. While we work with clients on many different issues, our clinicians have particular expertise in trauma, eating disorders, self-injury/destructive urges, stress management, pain/illness, problematic coping behaviors, and often co-occurring mood (i.e., Depression) and Anxiety Disorders. Therapy is never one size fits all. We strive to create deep and meaningful connections that meet you where you are, and support you in getting to where you want to be.

My practice is dedicated to helping people develop their capacities for self-awareness, in order to overcome difficulties in their lives and to find greater fulfillment in relationships, work, and creative pursuits. My approach focuses on helping individuals gain insight into ways of relating to themselves and to others that lie outside of conscious awareness. Speaking with a uniquely attentive listener in a consistent, confidential setting helps to bring these aspects of experience into conscious awareness. With time, this process facilitates significant and meaningful change. I work with adults, adolescents, and children with a wide range of difficulties. I have expertise in working with talented individuals who find themselves stuck in unsatisfying patterns, and I have particular experience and interest in issues around creative inhibition and expression. I have experience working in outpatient, hospital, residential, school, community mental health, and day program settings, and have completed advanced clinical training in psychodynamic psychotherapy at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School.
I have over 30 years experience working clinically at MGH & in private practice and teaching at Harvard Medical School. Are you experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship problems or an Eating Disorder? My patients and I work collaboratively to explore the roots of their symptoms and develop better coping strategies along the way. I am an interactive and relational therapist. I offer Individual, Couples & Group psychotherapy. Life transitions can be complicated and difficult. Whether the transition is to a change in relationship status, new city, new job, or new school, it is helpful to have a safe, private space to process overwhelming emotions that invariably arise. I see patients over zoom as well as face to face indoors and in an Outdoor Covid Compliant Office space. I am certified in Animal Assisted Therapy. "Henry Freud" is a calm, gentle, affectionate Black Lab who is eager to be part of your healing process. He is happy to offer therapeutic comfort: snuggles, kisses, floor play, secured privacy and/or bring you tissues. Henry's greatest gift is the ability to make everyone feel special and loved in a unique way.
I have been a licensed clinical psychologist since 1993 and have extensive I experience treating undergraduate and graduate students from Boston area universities for anxiety, depression, relationship, and eating-disorder issues. I strive to provide a warm, supportive, nonjudgmental atmosphere where clients are free to explore their difficulties as well as reconnect with and harness their strengths. Although Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is my main orientation, I understand that each person's needs are unique and I apply other modalities including insight orientated therapy and mindfulness. I am a clinical social worker based in Brookline with accessibility from the C and D lines. I work with adult individuals and couples, with a particular emphasis on life events or transitions that disrupt our sense of who we are. Before going to school to become a therapist, I completed a doctorate in philosophy — a domain of inquiry that continues to inform my clinical work on many levels. My primary therapeutic worldview comes from narrative therapy, which views problems in life as supported by dominant stories about who we are or how we should be. These stories can cause distress when they fail to represent what is most important to us. Instead of seeing such stories as an indication of flaws in a person’s self or personality, I assume they have been introduced from the contexts that have shaped us. In addition to narrative therapy, I draw from Buddhist mind training practices, which cultivate the ability to hold difficult emotions with steadiness and kindness to ourselves. Finally, I am influenced by somatic approaches, which emphasize felt experience in the body as a source of information and an entry point to healing. I aspire to meet everyone I encounter in my work with respect, warmth, and curiosity. I often imagine myself walking alongside the people I work with, but following one step behind. My job is to look out with you at the landscape you see and help you identify places you might like to explore. Then we can visit those places and see how things look from there.
You were sexually assaulted or experienced a disturbing sexual encounter. Now you feel jittery & anxious. Sometimes you have panic attacks. You can’t stop thinking about what happened and try really hard to avoid any reminders of it. You may feel really confused about how to label the experience and wonder if it was partly your fault. You have nightmares, trouble with intimacy, and are concerned you’re now permanently damaged or broken. It is possible to heal. You can feel relaxed again, get pleasure from intimacy, and feel good in your body. I am Rachel Stanton (she/her) and I use treatments like EMDR & Progressive Counting to help you process what happened in small, manageable chunks. These techniques are known for being more efficient and effective than regular talk therapy. Please go to my website CounselinginBoston.com to learn more about these techniques and the services I offer.
As a psychologist, writer and consultant, my favorite population to work with are college students and graduate students, often managing mental health issues, while navigating independence, relationships and larger life choices all at once. In fact, I recently finished writing a book, "College Mental Health 101" based on hundred of interviews and thousands of students I've worked with over the years whose voices are in the pages. Whether its adjustment to school and making career decisions, to identity or family of origin concerns, to depression, anxiety and other mental health issues, I love working with students to find ways to improve their life circumstance. I have an academic interest in mindfulness, neuroscience and communication, and teach on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and globally.
