People seek out a therapist for a variety of reasons-day-to-day life stressors, unhelpful thoughts, or significant life transitions. I want to provide people with a space where they can process any of these topics in a compassionate and empathetic manner. Therapy is a journey and I seek to walk this journey by your side while empowering you to explore, identify, and live the best versions of your life. Prior to working at Therapy Today, I worked at Community Mental health for nearly a decade in various roles and with various populations. I have also worked in a residential treatment facility for youth. In both roles, I provided individual and group therapy and I worked with youth and their families in navigating family dynamics and systems.

“Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength.” I believe that everyone deserves a place to feel safe and seen. In my approach, I strive to create an environment of acceptance and warmth, while striking a balance of change and accountability to help you reach your goals. Doubtless, you have overcome so much on your journey, and my goal is to help you embrace and hone the strengths you already possess. When I was a student in college, my parents were going through a bitter divorce and I lost a close friend from school and three family members all in one year. I felt as if I was losing my mind. My close friends connected me with a therapist and it literally changed my life. I felt heard, supported and validated and was given permission to let things go and actually focus on my issues and my needs instead of everyone else’s. This is one of the main reasons why I practice therapy and have a heart for college-age students. I was you once and I hope to help just as I was once helped. We all go through seasons in our lives when things just feel too overwhelming or we feel as if we cannot get through it without a little help. I believe that is what therapy is for. It is to help us find our voices and find ourselves again. In the seasons when we feel lost and hopeless, a therapist can help empower us to find the strength to overcome our challenges and heal from our pain. I am a firm believer in the notion that we only live once on this earth. Make the most of it. Heal the hurt. Develop a growth mindset. Live a life that is full so that you can thrive at being the best version of you! I am honored to help you get there!

Many mental health issues are related to a trauma response in the brain and body. Trauma is often conceptualized as one single event or experience that causes intense fear or distress. However, not all people who experience these kinds of events develop trauma symptoms, and many people who do experience trauma symptoms cannot identify a single event such as this. Another way to understand trauma symptoms is that they occur when an individual’s context overwhelms their nervous system’s ability to cope. This forces the nervous system to utilize strategies to try to bring the body back into balance. These strategies are usually useful or adaptive in the moment, but unhealthy and disruptive in the long run. The coping patterns can be related to addiction, disordered eating, the way we emotionally engage in relationships, or the chronic up-regulation (anxiety) or down-regulation (depression) of our nervous system. All are attempts to process the energy stored in the nervous system in response to stressors. Together we will utilize elements of mindfulness, somatic expression, Family Systems Theory, and Narrative therapy to develop new strategies to express emotion, regulate the nervous system, and communicate effectively with ourselves and with the people in our lives.
