Therapists for college students near Duke University
Accepting New Clients! Congratulations on taking the first step in choosing a therapist. Do you need someone to listen without judgment? A safe place to share your thoughts and feelings and to get out of that "stuck space" by considering solutions to improve your overall wellbeing? I would enjoy beginning this journey with you by establishing a warm, supportive, and trusting relationship through open and non-judgmental communication. At heart, I am a helper, encourager, and challenger who believes in people. My theoretical approach involves integrating Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior-Informed Therapy (DBT), and Solution-Focused Therapy to explore thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Working together you will increase knowledge and awareness and create action steps that may help ease stress and anxiety, navigate life transitions, and work through school, career, and relationship concerns. Our work together will always support my belief in the strengths of the client and the value of your role in the therapeutic process. In sessions, you can expect a compassionate, direct, and collaborative approach. Feel free to reach out with questions about counseling in general or next steps to get started. Best wishes on your wellness journey!
It’s not always one defining event—often, it’s the cumulative impact of stress, anxiety, low self-worth, and unprocessed experiences that gradually erode your sense of well-being. You might be noticing a persistent undercurrent of worry, emotional exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, or a critical inner voice that’s hard to silence. Perhaps depressive symptoms have taken hold, or past experiences are continuing to show up in ways you can’t control. I work with teens and adults who are ready to explore what's beneath the surface and begin the work of healing. My approach is trauma-informed and grounded in evidence-based practices. Whether we're unpacking the impact of trauma, exploring ways to better manage mental health symptoms or rebuilding your sense of self, we'll approach the process collaboratively and at a pace your nervous system can manage. You don't have to have anything figured out to start the therapy process. You just have to show up - and I'll meet you there. I encourage you to reach out if you think we will be a good fit!

My name is Laura Fisher-Caudill (she/her), and as a trauma therapist and human, I am excited to get to know you. As a highly sensitive, empathetic person with big emotions, I love helping other empathetic humans heal from past trauma. As someone who’s experienced mental health struggles and complex trauma throughout my life experience, it’s been incredibly rewarding to provide a space where people can create meaningful connections between their past experiences and current realities and work towards healing from past trauma to find their own inner control, wisdom, and growth in the process. I am deeply committed to helping clients I work with find their inner strength, resilience, and the tools they need to heal from the past and create a life filled with purpose, joy, and fulfillment. My goal is to empower others in learning effective tools for navigating emotional distress and unburdening the pain of past trauma to create their lives worth living! My clients often describe themselves and their experiences as: Cycle breakers in their family systems. They often have lived experience as the “golden child” or “scapegoat” in their family of origin and may struggle with boundary setting or understanding the impact of childhood dynamics on their relationships and trauma responses in the present. Adult children of parents who were/are emotionally immature and/or have narcissistic behavior patterns. Complex traumatic experiences throughout their lifetimes, such as emotional invalidation or emotional trauma/neglect, criticism, and/or judgment by caregivers, being parentified early in life or expected (either overtly or covertly) to caretake emotional needs of their parents and not have needs of their own, being placed in the role of peacekeeper in their family system, and may have experienced sexual, physical, or other forms of abuse as well. Living with a chronically dysregulated nervous system due to experiences of complex traumatic events throughout their lives, often beginning at a very young age. Somatic, or body based, symptoms of complex trauma, such as chronic pain, illness, stored emotions in hips, shoulders and other areas of the physical body. Neurodivergent, specifically being highly sensitive to sensory experiences, emotionally intense, empathetic humans who identify as being gifted and/or having ADHD. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community. We all experience grief in our day-to-day lives. We could be feeling grief regarding a chance not taken, a divorce, the loss of a relationship, the loss of a pet, the loss of a loved one, the loss/damage of belongings, the loss of trust in the world, experiencing holidays without someone special, or having to move. We will begin by giving space for the losses and adjustments you have experienced throughout your life, ensuring each version of you can release these emotions and process them in a safe space. I will add helpful interventions, techniques, and educational tools to provide additional support and deeper understanding. I will be your cheerleader. When you feel isolated, confused, or overwhelmed, I will shine light and provide space and consistency. I believe in gentle pushes when needed. I will give space to process emotions, learn new therapeutic interventions, and work with you to create direct action or action goals that honor you for lasting, meaningful change. We will utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, psychoeducation, solution focused therapy, maintain/create effective coping skills, practice stress reduction habits, utilize grief therapy techniques, and honor rituals/memorials as needed/wanted. I work with clients who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, and family/relationship issues. I will cultivate space for you to process these, honor these, and take action steps. We will get you to a place where you can experience the present more fully while honoring your past.
Welcome! I am so glad you are here. Taking the first step can be hard, but one that can be extraordinarily rewarding. I have extensive experience working with students with anxiety, stress, academic and career needs, learning disabilities, Autism, behavior and trauma. I have been involved with writing, and implementing IEP's and 504's, as well. School can force you into learning things about yourself you never knew. It can be a great thing, but it can also cause stress, and force you to self-reflect in a way that we often times may want to avoid. My hope is to come alongside of you to create a life of resilience despite any adversity you may encounter. I am in network in NC with Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Aetna. For out of network benefits, I can provide a superbill to assist with reimbursement and I also partner with a company to assist you with submitting claims, if you wish to utilize them.

Welcome, I am so glad you are here. Experiencing a loss or trauma can feel alienating and leave you lacking connection. Maybe you have experienced a loss/trauma while also navigating pregnancy, postpartum or infertility. Maybe you are/were military but don't feel supported by the systems in place to "help". You might want to feel different but struggle to navigate the how. Or the opposite you understand the how, you have done lots of therapy and continue to feel like you are not making the progress you wish. Whether you've never been to therapy before or you have tried it before but feel stuck; you are in the right place. Therapy is not "one size fits all". This idea is incredibly important to me in helping you create change in your life because not a single client’s stories are ever the same even if they are similar, your unique experience needs a unique treatment approach. One of the approaches I use which is different from most is Brainspotting. Whether it's traditional therapy, brainspotting or clinical supervision you are in need of; I would love to connect with you to discuss your needs and if I am the right fit for you!

I specialize in working with college-age clients who grew up in chaotic or neglectful households. My clients often appear to have it all together- high-achieving, involved on campus, the friend everyone leans on. Despite this, they struggle with anxiety in relationships, fear of others' judgment, difficulty letting people get close, exhaustion that rest doesn't fix, and a sense of being lost or like an imposter, even when things look good on paper. Often, at the core of these struggles are unresolved wounds or narratives from early in life. During our most formative years, we adopt lasting beliefs about ourselves and the world- a blueprint we carry into adulthood. For many of my clients, that blueprint is resurfacing now, in the first real independence of college: new relationships, distance from family, and the pressure to figure out who they are outside of old roles. It shapes how they connect with roommates, partners, and friends, and how they handle the stress of exams, deadlines, and an uncertain future- often without their realizing it. These narratives, inherited from caregivers, family, or environment, become deeply ingrained and unconscious. While they may have helped us survive earlier in life, they can become counterproductive as we step into adulthood, creating invisible barriers to connection and well-being. Putting these thoughts into words in a safe space allows them to surface where they can be understood and rewritten.
