Hi! I am Dr. Monica Johnson. If you’re reading this, it means you are taking your mental and emotional health seriously and researching someone who will be a good fit for your journey. This is exciting! Let me tell you more about me to help you with your decision making process. I am a Licensed Psychologist in NYC, but some people think of me as a problem solving pro, empowerment guru, and self-compassion guide! I partner with my patients to find pathways to a better life. I work best with people who are tired of being stuck and ready to make changes. I can’t change you. Only you can do that, but I’m super excited to be your side kick on the journey and help you highlight roads to success. One of the most important things to know about me is that I am NOT a smile and nod type of therapist. I get down in the trenches with you. I’m down to earth and real with you through this process which means I will call you out on your BS and help you figure out what to do with it. We will work hard and laugh a lot. For the record, there is nothing off limits or shameful in therapy. I’ve seen it all and heard it all. If you need to talk about sex, money, medical issues, or “that one time in Amsterdam,” don’t hesitate! I work with people of all backgrounds (race, gender, sexuality, religion, alternative relationships) and you should expect that I will affirm your identity while helping you to develop a fuller self concept. My job is to help you tap into strengths you already possess (we all have them even if we can’t see them yet) and create new ones! If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, feel constantly overwhelmed by your emotions, past traumas, poor relationships, low self esteem, or just deciding what the next step is in your career/life, I can help.

Charlie Health is a virtual behavioral health program for adolescents and young adults with moderate or severe mental health concerns or co-occurring substance use or eating disorders. Designed to meet the needs of those who require more than weekly therapy, our program combines curated group therapy, individual therapy, and family therapy into personalized treatment programs. We are helping to serve those who are in crisis, or have been historically underserved, by eliminating the most significant treatment barriers: geographical and financial access. We work with nearly all commercial insurance nationwide and have no waitlist, thereby helping people access quality, evidence-based care regardless of insurance, location, or other barriers.
Chronic illness impacts more than physical health; it can shape your identity, relationships, academics, and emotional wellbeing. The students I work best with are often juggling a lot—classes, exams, relationships, family expectations, jobs, and the constant pressure to “have it all figured out.” If you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck, unmotivated, or just not like yourself lately, you’re not alone. College can be exciting, but it can also be lonely and stressful in ways people don’t always talk about. In our sessions, you’ll have a space where you can be real—no judgment, no pressure, just honest conversations about what’s going on and practical tools to help you cope. Whether you’re struggling with stress, burnout, confidence, friendships, or big life decisions, my goal is to help you feel more grounded, clear, and in control. If you’re ready for support that actually fits your life as a student, I’d love to help you take that next step.

Life can feel overwhelming these days, and meaningful relationships, joys and values can be hard to sustain. The coping patterns we adopt often get in the way of feeling better, and connected with others. My practice fosters an empathetic environment where clients are at ease exploring emotions and concerns. Collaboratively, we address issues such as anxiety, depression and self-esteem struggles, and tackle problems such as relationship difficulties, life transitions, loss and school-related stressors. Jointly, we will define concrete goals, develop real-life coping skills and become more aware of underlying barriers to well-being. I am an LCSW (NYU) with a psychodynamic approach. I also draw on techniques from mindfulness-based therapies and trauma-informed methodologies. A former art history professor and undergraduate advisor (B.A. & M.A., Williams; Ph.D. U.Chicago), I understand the particular challenges college students face. Often, the hardest step about therapy is the decision to begin. I welcome the opportunity to meet you and explore how I can be helpful to you.
