Often in therapy we work to bring what's unconscious into consciousness, which can create more agency, freedom, and choice. As both a psychotherapist and writer, I believe in the power of finding connections between that which is seemingly disconnected in order to uncover a deeper understanding of oneself and the way one relates to others and the world. I specialize in treating trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, interpersonal relational difficulties, and life transitions. Using a psychodynamic framework and relational lens, my work is informed by both psychoanalytic theories and Buddhist psychology. I often draw from Internal Family Systems framework and specialize in psychedelic integration psychotherapy. I received my psychotherapeutic education from New York University, The National Institute for the Psychotherapies, and Nalanda Institute’s Contemplative Psychotherapy Program. I hold an MSW from NYU, an MFA from The New School, and a BA from Boston College. For more info: alipowerpsychotherapy.com.

The name 'Winding Path' is a classic metaphor for life - the way in which one's life goes is often not linear or predictable. Often, people find themselves on a path that they both did not see coming nor are sure of where it will lead. This is what brings many people to therapy. I specifically gear my practice to help those with stress, trauma, family conflict, and symptoms that arise with indecision. The ethos of my practice is that I will meet clients where they are and walk with them on their own winding path, while using the therapeutic tools garnered from years of training to aim toward lessening their unease and increasing their clarity.

My approach to the therapeutic process is built on trust, authenticity and growth. I combine warmth and comfort with gentle directness, helping you feel supported while also encouraging meaningful growth and personal accountability. Rather then offering quick fixes, I work alongside you to better understand the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, even if at times it is hard to hear.

We are a team of clinical social workers specializing in yoga/mindfulness, EMDR, and CBT. Our understanding is that in order to truly heal, we must honor our whole-body and mind working together. Many of our clients find that much of their suffering is stored throughout their bodies as anxiety, depression, and stress begin to take over. We support students as they navigate the unfamiliar and sometime daunting transition into adulthood and offer a warm, hopeful guide towards joy and purpose. Our virtual counseling services are available to individuals located in Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Vermont, Maine, Illinois, and California. We welcome you to get to know us, the services we offer, and reach out to schedule session.

Due to licensing rules, I can only work with clients in New York State! Hi, my name is Alia and I became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor after my own experience being diagnosed with bipolar one disorder during my undergrad college years. I try to take what I have liked working counselors over the years (being listened to, validated & empathized with), what has not worked for me (those who gave preachy, simplistic advice...) and incorporate the helpful counseling styles into my practice. My area of specialty emerged while I was in graduate school. I had the honor of working with Survivors of Domestic Violence. I also have spent several years working as an Outpatient Behavioral Health Therapist at a hospital assisting clients heal from depression, anxiety, mood disorders and trauma. COVID-19 hasn't been easy on our generation, and especially not for students. I am noticing an increase in social anxiety and overall questioning of the meaning of life. I remain committed to the mental health field, however, and hope you reach out to see if I'm a good match for you! NEW: I have recently started a therapy blog! What stories shape your sense of self and the world? Have you found yourself stuck or disempowered by the stories you tell about yourself or others? With my unique background in mental health counseling and doctorate in English Literature, I approach therapy as a collaborative, meaning-making process informed by story, culture, and connection. I aim to make your life more robust by empowering you to widen narrative possibilities. Given my continued connection to educational spaces, I am especially interested in the stories we tell ourselves about education, learning, and development (and the stresses that come with expectations around perfectionism). My approach is shaped by a strong awareness of “systems,” including educational/academic systems, recognizing that personal suffering is inseparable from how we are shaped by cultural and historical contexts. Through attuned listening to your story across the systems you inhabit, I work to position you as the author of your own life. I undertake a collaborative, rather than authoritative role in my therapeutic work. I am interested in an array of identities and “concerns” such as grief, depression, anxiety, “disordered” eating, existential dilemmas, LGBTQ-facing issues, illness, transitions, attachment, academic experiences, etc. Likewise, I employ a variety of approaches in my work—ACT, DBT, psychodynamic, narrative therapy, creative arts therapies, Gestalt, psychodynamic therapy, Internal Family Systems. At the core, I utilize a reparative lens: rather than solely foregrounding wounds, I champion joy, resilience, and the potential for healing. I invite you to embark on this path forward with me as we build a therapeutic space for honoring the complexity of your story and work to cultivate wholeness.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist providing psychotherapy for college students and young adults in the Pittsburgh area and throughout Pennsylvania via telehealth. Many of the students I work with are dealing with anxiety, academic pressure, relationship challenges, identity questions, and the stress of major life transitions. My approach to therapy is insight-oriented and collaborative. I integrate psychodynamic therapy with practical strategies drawn from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness. Therapy provides a space to better understand patterns in thoughts, emotions, and relationships while developing healthier ways of responding to stress. Students often come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure how to move forward. Together we work to clarify what is happening beneath the surface, build emotional resilience, and create meaningful change in areas such as anxiety, depression, relationships, and self-confidence. I provide both in-person sessions in Carnegie, Pennsylvania and secure online therapy throughout the U.S. via PSYPACT. Prior to private practice I trained and worked full time at five counseling counseling centers in various cities.
